Footnotes

  • The inscription written on the base can be translated as 'residing in the Mountain of the South and returning at sunset, tasting hundreds of herbs and curing the patients'. The inscription may indicate the figure as Li Shizhen (1518 - 1593), the greatest herbalist and naturalist in China during the Ming dynasty. His writing of the Bencao Gangmu, also known as Compendium of Materia Medica, is regarded as the most comprehensive medical book in the history of traditional Chinese medicine, and is still in print and used as a reference book today.
