Ming dynasty, signed Dong Cun Of slender rectangular form, the plainly decorated body with finely incised kaishu inscriptions and seal marks on two sides, the three feathers of delicate beauty featuring fine white barbs. 22.2cm long.
The inscription literally translates as:
'The graceful posture of lying on clouds and savouring snow, the elegant spirit embracing jades and mouth-holding pearls'
'Tai' square seal mark 'Ru' square seal mark
'Serene and harmonious life' rectangular seal mark
'For the appreciation of elderly and senior Brother Shi, presented by younger Brother Xian Pan'
'Dong Cun' square seal mark
Zhou Chen (14601535) alias Shunqing, sobriquet Dongcun, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, and was a renowned Chinese painter active during the mid Ming Dynasty. He specialised in landscape and figurative paintings and was the teacher of the famous painters Tang Yin and Qiu Ying. Zhou painted in a conservative style based on Southern Song (11271279) landscape paintings from his teacher Chen Xian (14051496), who specialised in the baimiao or 'plain-line' technique.
