Footnotes

  • It was during the mid Qing dynasty when a balance between economical and political developments was achieved, the yuzuo or jade workshop within the Palace had an extensive growth in terms of the quantity of the jade production as well as the creative design for the Imperial jade carvings. The Qianlong Emperor ordered the establishment of the 'Ruyi Studio' for the Palace workshops and employed the most skilful jade carvers from Suzhou to produce the finest quality Imperial jade vessels. The sophisticated form of the current lot is taken from an archaic bronze wine vessel 'you', in a reminiscent style of the past or 'fanggu', highly favoured by the Qianlong Emperor, showcasing knowledge of the past and the respect for traditional ancestry of the Imperial Qing court.
