Early Qing dynasty Elegantly carved of quatrelobed form using the intersection between internodes of the plant, the shallow sides rising from a continuous shallow foot around the edge at the base and flaring upwards towards the barbed rim, the interior worked and base revealing the natural grains of the wood. 11.2cm wide.
The haitang or quatrelobed shape draws inspiration from earlier metalworks. For two Tang dynasty gilded silver dishes with similar shapes from the Shannxi Provincial Administration of Cultural Relics, illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua dacidian: jinyinyushi juan, Hong Kong, 2005, p.110, pl.070, 071. Scholarly objects with similar design were also used by the Imperial courts. See a bamboo veneer dish with the same design from the National Palace Museum, Taipei (collection number GD000040N000000000). Similar forms have also been applied on Song to Ming dynasty lacquer wares, where examples are housed in museum collections around the world.
The quatrelobed shape has also been replicated in many other forms of raw materials, including wood, ceramic, bronze and silver. For a related example sold at auction, see a small quatrelobed zitan tray from the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat collection, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 4 April 2012, lot 130.
