The heavily cast vessel resting on a ringed foot, the compressed wide body curved inwards and rising to a slightly flared neck, flanked at the sides with handles in the form of dragon heads spewing forth water, the exterior cast with Islamic inscriptions in Arabic script within barbed borders, the base cast with impressed four-character zhuanshu seal mark.
23.6cm wide.

Footnotes

  • The two Islamic inscriptions within barbed borders on the current lot form the shahadah or 'declaration of faith and belief'. Together, both inscriptions form the formula which reads, "ashhadu an la ilaha illa 'llah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulu 'llah"; and literally translate as "I witness that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah".

As seen in porcelain wares, bronze vessels were made and popularised during the Zhengde period, cast with decorative inscriptions of Arabic script, probably influenced from the large body of influential Muslim advisors, eunuchs and envoys serving at court. It is said that the Zhengde Emperor was well disposed towards Islamic culture and is rumoured to have converted to Islam.
