An exceptional white jade plaque
Suzhou, mid Qing dynasty
The exquisite white pebble of extreme clarity and translucency, tinged with attractive russet-brown spots, intricately worked with young attendants depicted guiding aged scholars in appreciation of nature, the younger figure depicted ecstatically leaping in joy with his head raised looking upwards, worked on one side with a bird in flight amidst wispy clouds, the reverse with finely worked pine trees amongst a mountainous landscape.

    A private English collection, formed in the 1940s

    Master craftsmen working in jade flourished in Suzhou from the Ming dynasty onwards, particularly focused on articles for the scholar's desk. The current jade plaque is exceptional for the quality of the stone and decoration, and ranks amongst the highest quality preserved examples of its type.

    清中期 蘇作白玉雕人物山水玉佩

    玉料色白,色均勻,微透光,帶黃色留皮,橢圓形。玉佩一面雕老者策杖回首,旁邊小童仰首嬉戲,周圍山石圍繞,松柏蔥鬱,祥雲繚繞,另一面雕另一老者與小童於山間,老者一手扶小童肩,小童高舉右手,抬頭仰望,天空中飛一鳥。
