ARINGHI, PAOLO. 1600-1676.
Roma subterranea novissima in qua ... antiqua christianorum ... illustrantur. Paris: [Leonard], 1659.
2 volumes in 1. Folio (400 x 245 mm). [viii], 352, [24]; [viii], 396, [16] pp. Double-page engraved map and myriad engraved illustrations (many of which are full-page). Period calf. Red pencil shelfmark to corner of title, 4 early gatherings with small wormtrail at foot, rebacked, heavily rubbed.
Provenance: Cecil Deedes (bookplate).

The Latin translation of Antonio Bosio's Roma sotteranea which was unfinished at the time of his death in 1629. In his edition, Aringhi expands the work of Bosio, who was the first person to extensively explore the catacombs rather than merely rely on accounts of them, and gives it a counter-Reformation and anti-Jewish tone.
