Strikingly embroidered in various shades of grey, green, pink, blue and white silk and gold wrapped thread with a bucolic landscape of houses nestled into rolling hills with a profusion of foliage and birds situated beneath the imposing presence of Mt Fuji, the background and gold details in couched gold thread, the design wrought in satin and chain stitch, signed in the lower left corner in two embroidered cartouches Kiyomizu [] gashi and Asakura Sentaro shusho; framed and glazed

  • The combination of couched gold thread and silk embroidery in the execution of this wall hanging adds a richness and depth to the pastoral design. The aesthetic of the decoration is very much in Western taste and this textile was most probably made for an exhibition.
