Footnotes

  • The prototype for the present lot remains at Hatfield House in the possession of the Marquess of Salisbury. The attribution to Taddeo Zuccaro (1529-1566) has now been discarded in favor of one to Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (1561/2-1636), although there is a school of thought that prefers John de Critz the Elder (c.1552-1642).

The National Portrait Gallery of London (NPGD17108) has a preparative drawing by Henry Bone of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley. The sketch is squared for transfer and dated December 1811

An enamel portrait of William Cecil also by Henry Bone but dated 1829, was offered Bonhams, London, Fine Portrait Miniatures, May 21, 2008, lot 32.
