A tinted and carved ivory figure of a scholar
Republic period
His head tilted upward as if viewing the moon with eyes crinkled and mouth open in an expression of joy and his long beard delicately incised and almost reaching his belt, while he clasps his hands contentedly behind his back, the surfaces tinted in a pale sepia wash and details picked out in black pigment; now attached to a wooden stand.
9 1/2in (24.1cm) height of ivory
10 3/4in (27.3cm) height with stand

Footnotes

  • As generations of Chinese school children can attest, the poet who raised his head to gaze at the moon (ju tou wang ming yue) was none other than Li Bo (or more commonly pronounced Li Bai), perhaps the figure represented here.
