Dreiser tells Mr. Munson he isn't able to respond in detail to an inquiry he'd sent, explaining, "I am putting everything into a study of working conditions in Mexico ... that insipid political mess classified as a modern government should be decorating trees instead of comfortable berths and I decided it was time someone realized conditions as they really are and not as Mr. Hearst depicts them."
