Footnotes

  • The Flying Fish was launched in 1851, this extreme clipper ship was only the fourth of her type. Clipper ships differed from previous ship designs in that their hulls were long and narrow, they had a low freeboard, a streamlined stern and a deep draft. The Flying Fish almost broke a speed record on her second voyage, sailing from New York to San Francisco in only 92 days. Her sister ship, the Flying Cloud, made the voyage just three days faster.
