Footnotes

  • The model of the present commode, entitled "commode aux quatre saisons" in Linke's daybook, is illustrated in Christopher Payne, François Linke (see plate 406 and the cliché reproduced p.489). This commode was also made with Coromandel lacquer panels replacing the vernis Martin.
It has been designed by Léon Messagé ans similarities can be found with mounts used by Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener but on the present commode, as explained by the author, "the overall interpretation is typical of Linke's work".

This piece is a perfect example of the exhuberant rococo style introduced by the designer and sculptor Léon Messagé and developed by Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener and François Linke, announcing the Art Nouveau. Léon Messagé achieved his first success at the 1882 Paris Exhibition, working for Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener, notably for a pair of petites commodes decorated with vernis Martin and ormolu mounts that show similarities with the present lot, one illustrated in C.Mestdagh (p.163). A few years later, Messagé provided most of the designs to François Linke for the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.
