Footnotes

  • This particular scene is taken from Greek mythology, as the second of twelve tests from the 'Labours of Hercules' and is believed to be from a fragment found in a 3rd century Greek manuscript. A poem about the Hero Hercules describes the trials and tribulation Hercules must go through to achieve immortality. It is from this backdrop that this impressive bronze depicts the second labour "Lernaen Hydra". Hydra, a nine-headed serpent, had been created simply to slay Hercules and so with his famed club, Hercules attacks the beast by luring it out of its lair near the swamp of lake Lerna. If only to highlight the plight and struggle of the hero in his task, two of the nine heads grew back, and after the struggle, the Hydra was eventually defeated by using a fire brand and Hercules thus won the challenge which would gain him a step closer to immortality.

This bronze group is closely related to a statue of Hercules and Hydra created by Edmund Hofmann von Aspernburg on the facade of the Michaelertrakt of the Hofburg in Vienna.
