carved in the round, seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular stone plinth, his hands folded in his lap, wearing a sampong carved at the back with folds falling in neatly arranged pleats, the belt decorated with rectangular panels containing flowerheads, mounted on base

    The Bayon is a temple at Angkor notable for the predominance of historical sculptures, rather than mythological. For a similar figure in the National Museum in Phnom Penh see Madeleine Giteau, Khmer Sculpture, London, p 201.
