A bronze Figure of Ugra Tara
Nepal, 15th/16th Century
the fearsome goddess standing in pratyalidhasana on an inert form of Shiva above a lotus motif, holding a vajra in her lower right hand, a skull cup in her lower left, a raised sacrificial sword in her upper right and a lotus bud in her upper left, hair pulled into a high chignon and secured with head-dress, serpents coiled in ear-lobes and curled around her neck, upper arms, wrists and ankles, adorned with a long beaded necklace, a tiger skin wrapped around her waist, on a square base separately cast and supported by four seated mythical creatures 25 cm. high

    Ugra Tara is the fierce aspect of the Hindu goddess Tara, second of the Dasa Mahavidyas or Ten Great Wisdom goddesses. She is the consort of Bhairava, an enraged manifestation of Shiva. This form of the goddess rarely appears at auction.
