RANGER IX.
Alphonsus crater, March 24, 1965, transparency, 23½ x 26¾ inches (600 x 680 mm), inscribed at head "Alphonsus Ranger IX rectified mosaic 1:250,000," framed.
Provenance: Gerard P. Kuiper; Ralph Turner.
From exposure to light, the transparency has faded in a manner that renders it more abstract. Ranger IX was designed to achieve a lunar impact trajectory, and to transmit high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface during the final minutes of flight up to impact.
