George Phillips Bond succeeded his father William as director of Harvard College Observatory in 1859, and held the position until his death. His cousin was Edward Singleton Holden, the first director of Lick Observatory. Bond worked closely with Whipple, and on July 17, 1850, they took the first daguerreotype of a star (apart from the Sun).
