'Peacock Feathers' an Impressive Lamp Base, circa 1900
the swollen ovoid body pierced to the lower section with alternating apertures, tubelined with stylised designed with matt blue feathers, against a green ground, with electroplate lamp well adapted for electricity

Footnotes

  • This lamp base is very unusual for two principal reasons. Firstly, it is scarce to see this shape with circular apertures towards the base. Two examples of a similar nature but different designs can be seen in Paul Atterbury's 'Moorcroft; 1897-1993 New Edition', Dennis & Edwards, 2008, pg. 56, however here the apertures have been cleverly incorporated into the design with feather tendrils encircling them. Secondly, the glazes employed here appear to be somewhat experimental, with the blue feathers in a matt finish, except the peacock eyes which are in a gloss glaze along with the green ground.
