Footnotes

  • This particular figure's design is taken from the cover of a popular Italian publication at the time called Le Grandi Firme or simply Grandi Firme.

The magazine was published between 1924 and 1939, and the second series, beginning in April 1937 through to the October 1938, is the most famous series thanks to the covers illustrated by Gino Boccasile and sometimes Rino Albertarelli.

During this period the tone of the magazine became lighter and more inviting, due in part to the Ladies 'Grandi Firme' that animated the cover, these glamorous models wearing Mediterranean designs and colours were the ultimate Italian pin ups.

This cover (shown insert), dated April 21 1938, was illustrated by Gino Boccasile and is asking 'Esiste La Signorina Grandi Firme?' which probably gave this figure its name of 'Signorina Grandi Firme'.

The figure itself is referenced in 'Lenci La Ceramiche: 1919-1937', L.Proverbio, Edizioni Tipostampa, Torino, 1986 (Plate 70/71) and 'Sandro Vacchetti E La Essevi: Ceramiche Del Novecento Italiano', Maria Grazia Gargiulo, Paparo Edizioni, 1995 (Plate 33).
