Footnotes

  • Morris's 'Minstrel' tiles were produced with a range of different musicians and were available as tile as well as stained glass panels. Originally in production from the early 1870s, they went on to be developed with four different glaze methods over 40 years: Over-glaze blue; over-glaze colour; in-glaze colour and finally in-glaze blue. The designs were re-drawn at one stage from Morris's originals by C. F. Murray. After Morris's death in 1905, 'Morris & Co.' passed to the control of F. and R. Smith, with H. C. Marillier being made Managing Director. Marillier reintroduced certain ranges of merchandise in a "more Edwardian style". This included tile production.
