    Colonel W.Lister, M.R.C.S. Eng., L.R.C.P. Lond. 1914, was commissioned Captain in the 1st West Riding Field Ambulance on 21st February 1912, and was a Major by December 1914. He did not proceed to France with that unit but remained in the UK to recruit and train the Reserve Field Ambulance in order to supply drafts of men to the first line unit in France. When it became necessary to send second line units to France he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 1st October 1915 to command the 2/1st West Riding Field Ambulance, and this unit crossed to France in January 1917 with the 62nd (2nd West Riding) division TF, where it served the medical needs of the Infantry Regiments of the 185th Brigade. After the war he set up a medical practice in Leeds and his OBE was awarded for being Assistant Director of Medical Services of the 49th (West Riding) Division, Territorial Army.
