  • A total of 9 Officers and 2 Other Ranks received the Defence of Ladysmith bar with the Natal Volunteer Medical Corps, including 2 Officers (Major Bowker and Lt Campbell), with it as a single clasp. He appears in the Natal Directory of 1907 as still serving with the Natal Medical Corps, and in the 1909 Directory as Medical Officer of Health for the Port Shepstone and District.

    The lot comes with a letter written by his daughter, stating he was born at Malvern and came straight to South Africa having left Edinburgh University, he contracted enteric fever during the Boer War and nearly died as a result. He volunteered for service in the Zulu rebellion but died just before WW1.
