Egypt 1882-89, dated reverse, one bar, Alexandria 11th July (G.Smith. Surgn R.N. H.M.S. "Penelope".); East and West Africa 1887-1900, one bar, Witu 1890 (G.S.Smith, Staff Surgn. R.N. H.M.S. Kingfisher.); Khedive's Star, dated 1882. Some light contact marks, otherwise very fine. (3)


  • Staff Surgeon G.S.Smith was the Surgeon of HMS Pioneer (lent from HMS Danae) in the expedition up the Niger in 1877, when several piratical villages were destroyed and severe punishment inflicted on the river pirates. He was then Surgeon on HMS Penelope at the mombardment of Alexandria on the 11th July 1882. He was then the Staff Surgeon of HMS Kingfisher and served with the Naval Brigade, landed under the command of Vice Admiral the Hon.E.R.Fremantle, Commander in Chief of the East Indies Station, for the punitive expedition against the Sultan of Witu, East Africa, in October 1890.
