    Lieutenant Colonel William Arthur Mawson was educated at Leeds, he took the M.R.C.S. in 1872 and the L.R.C.P.Lond. in 1874. He entered the India Medical Service as Surgeon in 1876. He was promoted to Surgeon Major on the 31st March 1888, and promoted to Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel on the 31st March 1896. His whole service was spent in military employment, chiefly as medical officer of the 14th Bengal Lancers. He served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, in the actions at Ali Musjid and Charaisa, and in the operations around Kabul, entitled to the medal with three clasps. He served on the North West Frontier in the Tochi from 1897-98 and in the Waziristan campaign of 1901-2, when he was mentioned in despatches, he received the IGS with two clasps. He retired on the 14th July 1906, but he rejoined the service again for WW1 serving from 1914-1919. He died on the 9th June 1925, aged 74, at Cobham near Exeter.
