Crimea 1854-56, one bar, Sebastopol, engraved (Acting Asst Surgeon. Wm Burkett.); Indian Mutiny 1857-58, no bar (Asst Surgn. W.R.Burkett. 74th Highlanders); Second China War 1857-60, two bars, Taku Forts 1858, Pekin 1860 (Asst Surgn W R W Burkitt 74th Highlanders.); Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, fitted with replacement ring suspension, engraved (Acting Asst Surgeon Wm Burkett.). Light contact marks very fine. (4)

  • Assistant Surgeon William Robert Burkett was born at New Ross Co. Wicklow on the 10th May 1834. Assistant Surgeon 74th Foot 17th April 1855 Surgeon Staff 18th April 1868: 48th Foot 12th May 1869. Staff 23rd Dec 1871: 52nd Foot 1st Jan 1873. Army Medical Department Surgeon Major 18th April 1868. Retired Half Pay 14th June 1877.

    He served in the Crimea and was at the assault on Sebon on the 18th June and 8th September. He served in India during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, and was present with the Kurnool Field Force at the capture of Shorapore and storming of the forts of Kopul. He further served in China with the 1st Dragoon Guards during the campaign of 1860 and was present at the affair of Sinho, capture of Taku Forts and surrender of Pekin. He died in Wicklow on the 23rd August 1877.

    Sold with minor research, the China medal being possibly an unique issue.
