Second China War 1857-60, two bars, China 1842, Canton 1857, unnamed as issued to the Royal Navy; New Zealand 1845-47, reverse dated 1845 to 1846 (Asst-Surgn R.D.Pritchard. H.M.S. Castor). Lightly toned, good very fine. (2)

  • Staff Surgeon Richard Davison Pritchard was born on the 20th March 1820, he joined the Royal Navy serving as an Assistant Surgeon aboard HMS Cornwallis in November 1841. He served aboard HMS Castor from the 27th September 1845 until the 16th November 1847, and was noted in the London Gazette of the 26th June 1846 as one of a number of men who under the command of Commander G.J.Hay accompanied him to attack the Pah and was extremely useful whilst serving in New Zealand. He served on Blenheim, Basilisk, Banger and Impregnable before serving aboard HMS Racehorse from the 30th December 1853 until the 27th May 1858 as Surgeon. He then served on Phoebe and Dauntless being promoted to Staff Surgeon. He retires on the 21st April 1871.

    In the book by K.Douglas-Morris he notes that "Fleet Surgeon R.D.Pritchard 2nd China Medal is known with clasp "Canton 1857" and "China 1842", the later being obtained privately and the 1st China medal discarded".
