    Surgeon William Hamilton Briggs was born in Pembrey on the 19th July 1854. He was commissioned into the Army Medical Department on the 30th September 1875 aged 21. As a surgeon he served with the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment in the expedition against the Jowaki Afridis in 1877-78. He also served in Afghanistan at the conclusion of the campaign in 1880. He took part in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85, including Abu Klea and the reconnaissance to Metammeh, also retreat to Korti. He was MID and specially promoted for services in Egypt. He served for three years as surgeon to the Governor of Madras, and was involved in a lenghty case involving him and Lady Connemara. His name was cleared however, but he changed his name by deed poll to "Broun". He retired with gratuity in 1893. He was re-employed in May 1915 and resigned his appointment in January 1916. He died at Teignmouth, Devon on 26th December 1937.
