In rcognition of their services in tending the sick in the Field Hospitals of the West Africa Frontier Force at Lokoja and Jebba (Joint citation with Sarah Clarke and Mary Nutt).

Minnie Powell was one of three Nursing Sisters attached to the Medical Department the others being Miss Sarah Clarke and Sister Mary Nutt. They had been sent out by the Colonial Office at the suggestion of Colonel F.D.Lugard (later Lord Lugard of Abinger) who was the Commanding Officer of the West African Frontier Force. They were appointed to the W.A.F.F. on the 26th February 1898 and set sail for Lagos on the same day. By April they had reached the Base Hospital of the W.A.F.F. up the Niger River at Lokoja. They were the first Englishwomen who ever got as far as Jebba and worked admirably in the most trying of conditions. At the close of their first tour of service, on Mr Chamberlain's recommendation, Queen Victoria was pleased to confer on them the decoration of the Royal Red Cross. During the Boer War she served at No.13 General Hospital, Johannesburg, then in September 1901 transferred to No.17 Field Hospital at Krugersdorp and from May 1902 went to No.20 General Hospital, Elandsfontein.

The lot includes a Certificate from Guy's Hospital dated August 1895 confirming her training over 3 years; copy of the London Gazette entry for the RRC. Telegrams relating to her being presented the award at Osborne House in August 1899; assorted newspaper cutting of the time; letter from Downing Street thanking her for the work she did in Africa; Certificate for appointment to be a Member of the Army Nursing Service Reserve, dated 16th January 1900 letter confirming thanking her for her work during the Boer War, dated 13th August 1902; Marriage certificate dated 27th September 1904; with minor assorted paperwork, and modern correspondence.
