The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E., Officer's breast badge, 1st type Civil Division; Coronation 1911, St.John Ambulance Brigade issue (Hon.Surg.C.J.R.McFadden.); British Red Cross Society Medal for Balkan Allied War 1913, one bar, Bulgaria, reverse engraved (C.J.R.Macfadden. M.D.); Service Medal for the Order of St.John, with two extra service bars (1335. Dist. Surg: C.J.R.McFadden. M.D. No.1 District. Surgeon. S.J.A.B. 1918.); Bulgaria, Order of the Crown, Knight's breast badge in silver and enamel. Mounted as worn. Very fine or better. (5)

    Cecil John Read MacFadden was born on 20th July 1870, he was educated at Lurgan College in Ireland and at Edinburgh University graduating as M.B. in 1894 and M.D. in 1898. Early in career he was interested in Red Cross work, and acted as Surgeon to the British Red Cross Society Bulgaria Relief Section, Second Balkan War. He later became interested in the work of the St.John Ambulance Association, and was a Lecturer during the whole period of his connection with it. In 1903 he joined the Brigade as Divisional Surgeon to the Hampstead Division, which he raised to a high state of effiency by his regular attendance and his interest in its affairs and members. In 1916 he was promoted to District Surgeon, and in 1923 to Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Northern Area. During WW1 he was Surgeon to the Cedar Lawn Military Hospital and Medical Officer in charge of the American Hospital, Caen Wood Towers, as well as Medical Officer to the Officers' Recuperative Hostel, Oak Hill Lodge. When Air Raids occured, he always reported at Headquarters at St.John's Gate, staying till the "All Clear" was given, and often remaining on duty till the early hours of the morning. He received the OBE for his war service.
    He was enrolled as an Honorary Associate of the Order of St.John in 1915, promoted to Esquire in 1918, Commander in 1926, being one of the representatives of the latter grade on Chapter General. In addition to this he was Divisional Surgeon for the Metropolitan Police from 1919, Medical Referee under the Workmen's Compensation Act, also ex-president of the Hampstead Medical Society. He died on the 26th June 1930, at his house in Frognal, Hampstead.

    The lot includes copied research and an original copy of the Hampstead and Highgate Express reporting his funeral service.
