The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E., 2nd type, Military Division; 1939-1945 Star; Africa Star; Italy Star; War Medal; Territorial Decoration, G.VI.R., dated 1947; Voluntary Medical Service Medal (Dr. John Gibb McCrie). Mounted as worn. Very fine. (7)

    John Gibb McCrie was born on the 24th November 1902, and was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University where he graduated with first-class honours. After house appointments he was lecturer in medicine with Sir Stanley Daidson and Assistant Physician to the Royal Infirmary at Edinburgh, becoming FRCpEd in 1931. He served with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the RAMC at the beginning of WW2 and saw action with the BEF, and for the rest of the war saw service in the Mediterranean and North Africa. In 1948 he was appointed the first full time dean of the faculty of medicine at Sheffield University, and served for 20 years in that position. In the 1950's he helped with the expansion of the Shefield Medical School. In addition he was president of the South Yorkshire branch of the British Red Cross. On his retirement in 1968 the new Nottingham Medical School appointed him part-time Associate Dean to help plan its first intake of students. He continued with this office until 1976. He died on the 24th January 1977, aged 74.
