Surgeon John Abercrombie 2nd Dragoon Guards from 9th June 1788 to 31st July 1818. "I commenced the study of my profession with Dr George French of Aberdeen to whom I served an apprenticeship of 3 years. I attended the classes of Dr Cooke of London for 6 months, Messrs W.Thomas Blizard of London for 12 months, Dr Dennison of London 6 months, I also attended as regular pupil of the London Hospital 12 months 1797-98. I am a member of the Royal College of Surgeons London since 1798, when I received the Surgeons Diploma and the following is a detail of my services on Full & Half pay with the several stations where I have served. Having passed an Exam before Royal College of Surgeons & Army Medical Board in Feb 1799 I was appointed a Hospital Mate. I was afterwards employed at General Hospital Gosport till I was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the 8th Regiment when I embarked for Jersey and Holland, on which stations and in England I continued to serve till appointed Surgeon of the 8th Reg. Infantry 2nd Batt. & subsequently removed as hereafter stated on Full Pay during the whole period of my service from 1798 to 1818. (Dr Abercrombie was a student in the Faculty of Arts at Marischall College & University of Aberdeen 1793-1797 in which latter year he graduated A.M.).
