    William Mills attested for the 6th Regiment of Foot 29 May 1841 Regimental number 1607. Mills first served at Deal and from January 1842 at Canterbury moving to Deal, Dover and by October 1842 to the Portsmouth Garrison. In July 1843 the Regiment was stationed in Chester, Mills on detachment to Wigan and Stockport during 1844. Granted leave from 1 to 29 November 1844 on return he left with his Regiment for Ireland arriving in Dublin in December 1844. Mills remained with his Regiment in Ireland serving on detachment at Downbridge, Drumkerrin and in May 1845 was in hospital in Dublin and on arrival of the Regiment in Cork in April 1846 he was again in hospital. The Regiment left Cork aboard the SS Westminster for the Cape of Good Hope in August 1846 and arrived in October. Mills served on the Eastern Frontier, Cape of Good Hope during July 1846 to June 1847, in August he was in hospital and at Cape Town from July to December 1848. In May and June 1849 he was based at Simonstown and in September and December was again in hospital. From July 1850 to March 1851 Mills served in British Kaffraria and in September and October 1852 was stationed at Fort White. Mills purchased his discharge in the Cape of Good Hope at Krishama Hoek 1 May 1853 to settle in South Africa.
