(J.Stoll. Cape Md Riflemen.). Generally very fine. (1)
James Stoll took part in the 1850 to 1853 campaigns.
An interesting unit. Apart from the officers and senior NCO's the CMR consisted wholly of Hottentots and men of mixed race in 1828. The CMR numbers fell to about 300 by 1835 and after the close of the first campaign the number of companies increased. Many men transferred to the CMR from Regiments returning to England and were formed into white companies. Principally used for skirmishing and scouting the CMR companies were scattered all along the frontier. Their use as Mounted Infantry was increasingly appreciated during the War of 1850 - 53 when the strength of the Regiment stood at 900 officers and men.
