For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a motor ambulance car driver during the operations. This lady was attached to a section of F.A.N.Y. working with the French Army, and in an emergency which arose was sent up to help to evacuate the hospitals, which were in danger of falling into enemy hands. For several days she assisted in clearing both British and French wounded from the various dressing stations, coming under heavy shell fire. During the time she was not actually driving her car she gave valuable assistance to the British Field Ambulance presonnel employed at the hospital of evacuation. Miss Russell worked for 72 hours consecutively helping in obtaining particulars of the wants of the British Wounded. Her courage and endurance in the face of danger were a magnificent example to all.

Miss Ellen (Dolly) Russell, M.M. later Mrs Hailes, born at Barberton, served in the Voluntary Aid Detachment from May 1915 in England before joining the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry; she served in France from November 1917 to January 1919 as a driver; was attached to Section Sanitaire Y2 and worked with the French 4th and 5th Armies.
