Footnotes

  • Frederick Oliver Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon GCVO FRS (1852-1923)

Educated at Eton College, he was styled as Viscount Goderich between 1859 and 1871, when his father was elevated to a Marquesate, when he was styled as Earl de Grey. As a young man he was attached to the commission sent to Washington after the American Civil War to settle the Alabama claims, and later served as MP for Ripon between 1874 and 1880. He is best remembered as one of the best shots of his age, and perhaps of all time, with a record lifetime bag of 556,000 birds, famously using hammer ejector guns long after the invention of the sidelock. This led to a long friendship with King Edward VII, serving as Treasurer to Queen Alexandra, and being made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1901, promoted to Knight Grand Cross in 1909, the same year that he succeeded his father to the Marquesate. His death was appropriate for a man so strongly associated with the shooting field, collapsing at the end of a successful days shooting on Dallowgill Park
