A German Black And White Half-Armour
Third Quarter Of The 16th Century
Comprising a burgonet with one-piece skull with roped comb and tapering plume-holder at the rear, deep hinged cheek-pieces each with embossed circle pierced with five holes over the ear, fixed pointed peak struck with an indistinct armourer's mark and the Nuremberg mark, and rounded neck-guard, 'almain' collar of three plates front and back, hinged on the left and with two pin-catches on the right, the top pair of plates plain, the pointed front plate struck with the Nuremberg mark, the spaudlers each of six downward-lapping lames, peascod breast-plate drawn-out to a prominent point at the base and struck at the neck with an armourer's mark, a fleur-de-lys, 'MC' above, moveable armhole gussets, and fauld of two plates, the lower one slightly arched over the crotch, back-plate shaped to the back and with side-plates and shaped flanged single-lame culet, all attached by rivets, and knee-length tassets each of six upward-lapping lames, the main edges turned and roped, the surfaces with raised or recessed plain bands and borders, all bright against a reblackened ground, dome-headed iron rivets throughout (releathered and with some pitting overall): on a wooden stand painted black
