A Turkish Shamshir
19th Century
With curved watered single-edged blade cut with two slender fullers along the back for most of its length on each side, the forte on one side damascened in gold with foliate panels containing Turkish inscriptions, and on the other with a cartouche-shaped panel and a recurved panel en suite, hilt comprising faceted border engraved quillon-block and tapering quillons with ovoidal terminals, and rounded rhinoceros horn grips, the pommel pierced for a sword-knot (silver mount missing from one side), in its wooden scabbard covered in red velvet with pierced iron locket, chape and suspension mount all decorated with silver-damascened foliage (some wear), the last with a ring for suspension
