Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Museo del Ejército, Madrid (probably both guns, the first to W. Keith Neal in 1951)
The first, W. Keith Neal Collection (G 113)
The first, Bonhams Knightsbridge, Fine Antique Firearms from the W. Keith Neal Collection, 10 November 2005, lot 52 (£30,240 including premium)

Francisco Antonio García, a student of Francisco López, was appointed royal gunsmith to King Carlos III in 1788, and to his successor King Carlos IV in 1799. He died on 25 May 1792, apparently leaving no disciples. As he is recorded only between 1774 and 1792, these may be his earliest dated products, and perhaps formed part of a set of guns

A powder-flask by García, dated 1789, is in the Real Armería, Madrid (inv. no. K 248). It is described and illustrated in Álvaro Soler del Campo, Catálogo de arcabucería madrileña (1687-1833), Madrid, 2006, pp. 169 and 308
