A German Cased Set Of Gunner's Instruments
Mid-18th Century
Of brass and iron, comprising a gilt rule of square section incised with a numbered scale along each side marked 'Stein', 'Bley', 'Zoll' and 'Eisen', and with stylised lion-head finial, four probes each with gilt handle en suite and of tapering circular section with tip of differing type, and a further probe of tapering rectangular section, its finial cast and chased as a standing female figure carrying a vase on her head, in their original fitted wooden case covered in leather (some surface loss overall) with gilt-brass locket and chape chased with martial and musical trophies each against a punched ground, the locket with a ring on either side for suspension
