An impressive and extensive early-20th century Japanese silver compendium
retailed by Arthur & Bond, Yokohama
Most parts with relief decoration on a spot hammered surface, comprising: a cocktail shaker with entwined dragon, monogrammed to cover "J H G;" a cigarette box with irises and ebonised wooden liner; two matchbox cases, one with a dragon and one with irises; two photograph frames, one with irises and the other with a prunus tree on a plain ground, also monogrammed; two petalled tazze with iris decoration; twelve tea bowls, in pairs with convolvulus, water lilies, irises, chrysanthemums, prunus and bamboo; six pairs of salts with conforming floral motifs, glass liners and spoons and six matching inverted baluster pepper pots; six further novelty symbolic pepper pots, a Torii arch, a Honden, an Ishidoro, a pagoda, a tea pot and a lantern; and twelve tea spoons with bamboo stems, all within a black lacquered case with blue velvet lining.

  • Provenance: purchased by J H Gunnell while serving in the US Naval Attache's office in Tokyo, thence by descent. Gunnell retired from a senior position in the Pentagon in 1935 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His portrait is shown in one of the frames.
