Footnotes

  • Prince Aly Aga Khan (1911-1960) was the younger son and only surviving child of Aga Khan III. A socialite, racehorse owner and jockey, he was the third husband of the actress Rita Hayworth and reportedly had a wedding proposal rejected by Grace Kelly.

Aly Khan's reputation as a socialite and lothario was legendary. Upon his marriage to Rita Hayworth, five hundred guests feasted on fifty pounds of caviar and six hundred bottles of Champagne around a swimming pool scented with two hundred gallons of eau de Cologne. It was rumoured that any woman who shared his bed was given a bracelet while anyone he dined with was gifted a cigarette case.

In 1939 he joined the French Foreign Legion and served with its cavalry division in Egypt and the Middle East. After being passed over for succession of the Aga Khan he later served as Pakistan's representative to the United Nations, where he became a vice president of the General Assembly. However, a short time into this position Aly sustained massive head injuries in a fatal car accident outside Paris where he died aged 48.
