Footnotes

  • For an example of this design of dish in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum Rotterdam, see 'Chinese Export Porcelain, Chine de Commande', D.F Lunsingh Scheurleer, Pitman Publishing Corporation, 1974, pl. 202 and p. 221.
Also, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, Winter 2003, 'Chinese Export Porcelain', Clare Le Corbeiller and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, pl. 27, p. 26, where it states that this design is accepted as the last of four commissioned from Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759) by the VOC between 1736 and 1739. No preliminary drawing survives, but in subject matter and decorative scheme it is consistent with the style of Pronk's recorded design for his 'Parasol' and 'Doctors' patterns. Distinguishing features are a narrative subject matter that hovers between Chinese and chinoiserie, border designs that combine Chinese and stylised European decorative elements and vivid colour combinations.
