Footnotes

  • The cosmic form of Avalokitesvara with eleven heads and a fan of arms is a Tibetan adaptation of Indian iconography. The eleven heads and thousand arms, in the Buddhist tradition, were generated by Avalokitesvara's vow to free all sentient beings from the Samsara.

In the attempt to comprehend the needs of the many who have not been freed, Avalokitesvara's head split into eleven pieces, which Amithaba Buddha transformed into eleven heads to help him hear the cries of the suffering.

Avalokitesvara's arms were similarly shattered into pieces, which Amithaba Buddha transformed into a thousand arms to help him aid all who suffered.

A similar example, but dated to the 18th century, was offered in Christie's New York, Sale of Indian and Southeast Asian, 21 March 2012, lot 811.
