Iron-red Hongxian four-character mark within a square
Delicately enamelled on one side with neo-Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi seated at a rootwood scholar's desk flanked by a vase of tree peony and a pile of books, apparently writing his famous 'Household Ordinances', a long extract from that text reproduced on the back of the vase in black enamel, the text corresponding to that customarily included in the annual tongshu calendar.

    Anthony Evans believed that the artist of this vase may be Wang Xiaotang (1885-1924), as pieces by this artist appear to have a very similar technique for painting the rather distinctive face.
