An enamelled baluster vase
Cyclically dated jiaxu year (AD1934), signed and sealed He Xuren, seal mark Xuren chupin
Enamelled around the body and neck in shades of black and grey as a wintry snow scene with a horse rider and a footservant on a bridge approaching a retreat, all among a mountainous landscape, inscribed and sealed at the reverse of the body and neck. 45.7cm (17½in) high

Footnotes

  • He Xuren (1882-1940) is known to be a member of the 'Eight Friends of Zhushan'.

    The inscription reads:

    豪氣衝寒雪浪開, 騎驢蹴踏小橋來, 梅蒼嶺互馨香滿, 折得旋歸助酒醅。時在甲戌(1934)季秋月,鍾藩先生法鑒。陽谷許人何處畫於湓浦

    It may be translated as:

    The heroic spirit battles the cold, the waves of snow thaw;
    Riding a donkey, we slowly trod towards a small bridge,
    The plum blossom and blue mountains together fill the air with a strong and pervasive fragrance;
    I turn around and return to help with the wine!
    In autumn of the jiaxu year,
    appreciated by the intellectual Zhong Fan,
    painted by He Xuren at Penpu.
