A fine pair of William IV presentation silver two-handled soup tureens and covers
by Edward, Edward Jnr, John & William Barnard, London 1830
Of lobed oval and inverted baluster form, each raised on naturalistic and elaborate frosted acanthus leaf supports with convolvulus sprays issuing from sides, the applied bold and bifurcated cast scroll handles with tendril ends and frosted acanthus leaf junctions, floral border, slightly domed covers chased and embossed with frosted acanthus leaves, the elaborate cast finials modelled as a stook with harrows, baskets, scythes and a spade scattered in front, engraved with the coat of arms to one side and presentation inscription opposite, "To Sir Thomas Sherlock Gooch Bart. from the gentry, clergy, and freeholders of the county of Suffolk in testimony of gratitude, respect, and esteem for his steady adherence to the principles which recommended him to their choice as one of their Representatives in seven successive Parliaments, for his indefatigable exertions in behalf of the landed interest, for his assiduous attention to his public Duties, and for his Promptitude & Zeal, on all occasions, in his service of his Constituents", height 31cm, length 43cm, weight 329oz.     Engraved with the arms and crest of Sir Thomas Sherlock Gooch, Bt, born 2nd November 1767. He married Marianne Whittaker on 12th May 1796 and raised three sons and three daughters. He succeeded his fathers seat of Benacre Hall, Wrentham, Wangford and became 5th baronet. In total he represented the County of Suffolk in Parliament for 24 years. He died on 18th December 1851.
