Footnotes

  • The former pair in the present lot were offered by How in a letter 22nd June 1945, and purchased soon afterward: "we have got a pretty pair of William and Mary candlesticks, London 1691." Borrowed by How for the Toronto Exhibition January to March 1958.

The latter pair are the subject of some considerable persuasion by How. It starts the week after the Walker sale at Christie's (11th July 1945): "What really defeats us is why on earth you did not buy the pair of candlesticks, they are the same maker as your casters, and, in desperation, as they seemed to be going cheap, we bought them for stock. Actually we have them to one side for you just in case you change your mind."

Again on 5th February 1946: "I am also sending the candlesticks again, as I do feel you ought to give them serious consideration." Purchased soon afterward for £60, as part of a consignment including a rare Scottish tot cup.
