The Last of the Giants 1985 signed 'CUNEO' (lower left), oil on canvas 76.5 x 102cm (30 1/8 x 40 3/16in).
PROVENANCE: Acquired direct from the artist by the present owner.
EXHIBITED: London, The Mall Galleries, Terence Cuneo 80th Birthday Exhibition, 1987. The Princess Alice Hospice exhibition of paintings
As with his painting 'Sole Survivor' of 1975, this painting was squeezed in whilst carrying out a commission for the Royal Artillery. With this depiction of the 2 - 10 - 0 steam locomotive Terence Cuneo has captured the very essence of long - freight trains trundling across Europe. Here speed has been arrested and the leisurely portrayal of the exhaust and the way in which the steam from the draincocks and cylinders swirls gently out, reinforces the feeling that this giant, at least, is in no hurry to depart the scene (Narisa Chakra, Terence Cuneo: Railway Painter of the Century )
We are grateful to Carole Cuneo for her assistance in cataloguing this lot
