Sheila Fell's art was founded on extensive field sketches made in the undulating farmland lying around her hometown of Aspatria, West Cumbria. These were then brought back to her London studio to be built up to into powerful, independent oils and greatly admired by both critics and the public alike. In the present work, amongst rolling hills, beneath the tempestuous sky, we see another of Fell's preoccupations, the people of landscape. She considered the figures as much a part of her subject as the land itself, it was integral for Fell that the community, farm-craft and the man-made aspects of the land was implicit.
